Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker as a little girl She was required to support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth grew up in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. In the midst of only two years in school, Ruth left to pursue an acting profession. The path was difficult to take. Although she got a job at a theatre in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. When she was employed as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she resigned and went back to Boston.
